Ambulant at home Most kidney patients are treated with a salt-restricted diet to reduce high blood pressure. Keeping a salt-restricted diet is difficult. Monitoring is done by determining the sodium and potassium content in the urine. In patients on a controlled salt diet, the treating physician checks the urine periodically for sodium. The salt content in the 24-hour urine is an indication of the amount of salt that was taken the previous day. This laboratory sodium check is, of course, incidental. An important asset is if the patient could regularly do this himself, which also creates more insight into his/her own diet and eating behavior. Until now, this possibility of self-management was lacking, because of the absense of a suitable self test.
