FISIC develops, produces and sells the Fisic Medimate self test for healthcare professionals, patients and researchers. FISIC develops the Medimate based on its proprietary microchip electrophoresis platform. The Medimate selftest offers the possibility to measure different parameters from a single drop in a few minutes at any location enabling better health care and improving the quality of life of patients.
The first publications of electrophoretic separation of ions on a Lab on a Chip appeared in the early 1990s at the end of the last century. The University of Twente has been experimenting with the technique since 1998. During a doctoral research between 2000 and 2004 it was shown that various ions, such as sodium, potassium and lithium, could be analyzed directly from a blood drop. Based on these results FISIC was founded. FISIC is a spin off of the Lab-on-a-Chip group of Prof. Dr. Ir. Albert van den Berg of the University of Twente and the Mesa+ Institute.
FISIC developed the Medimate self test platform from 2005. In 2012 this led to the first self-test for lithium, this self-test could be used by professionals at the outpatient clinic and patients at home. In 2015 further development was initiated to improve the number of species measured in combination with improvements in accuracy and reliability. New validation studies were carried out in 2018 and 2019. From this moment the Medimate can measure potassium, creatinine and lithium in plasma, venous whole blood and fingerstick whole blood, and sodium, potassium and creatinine in urine. In fingerstick whole blood an additional detection of hemolysis and blood drop damage has been added.
In the period 2019 and 2020, the Medimate was tested in various applications and since 2021 a test package has been available for professional use for, among other things, measuring at mental health care clinics. Main users are psychiatrists counseling patients with bipolar disorder who are prescribed lithium medication. In addition, the Medimate can also be used at home by patients themselves. For the time being, the latter only happens in study environment.
The Medimate platform is protected by various patents in the EU and USA that are owned by FISIC. In addition, FISIC owns the brand names FISIC and Medimate in the EU.
