From platform to product

Medimate is a spin-off company of the University of Twente. Medimate uses innovative Lab-on-a-Chip technology to create healthcare products with major added value for users and professionals. We focus primarily on products in the Point-of-Care segment. The core of Point-of-Care is making it possible to be able to apply medical diagnostics at all times and in all places.

The technology we use enables us in principle to measure all charged particles (ions) in fluids. Measuring lithium in blood is the first practical application to be developed. The meter and chips for this application will be available in the first half of 2010. The second application of the technology is measuring the sodium concentration in urine. The expectation is that this product will be available in the second half of 2010. There are also R&D projects in progress to measure calcium, phosphate, potassium and creatinine in blood. Other substances will follow later.

The implementation of Lab-on-a-Chip technology in end products requires extensive development. Especially when these products have to be used by anyone with just a simple instruction sheet (plug and play). For products using Lab-on-a-Chip technology two things always have to be developed: the measuring instrument and the fluid chip (the actual Lab-on-a-Chip).

The Medimate Mulitireader ® is the measuring instrument. This convenient Medimate Multireader forms the interface with the user, controls the fluid chip, calculates the conductivity detection of an ion level (concentration) and stores the measurements. The image below shows the Medimate Multireader (left) and a disposable fluid chip (right: a closed and open version).

On the left the Medimate Multireader® and on the right the Disposable Chip (closed in the upper picture, closed in the bottom picture).
